Suspect in British student’s death caught on CCTV

AMANDA KNOX, one of the suspects in the murder of British student Meredith Kercher, was caught on camera entering the apartment they shared on the night she was killed.

The CCTV footage contradicts the American’s claim that she was at the house of her Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito.

Ms Knox, Mr Sollecito and Congolese bar owner Diya “Patrick” Lumumba have been arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting and killing the 21-year-old student in the central Italian city of Perugia. Ms Knox was reported to have told police she was in the kitchen of their flat and heard Meredith’s screams on the night she died.

Her mother Edda Mellas visited her in prison at the weekend and yesterday told reporters her daughter had withdrawn that version of events and reverted back to her original statement that she was with Mr Sollecito at his house on the evening of November 1. A police source said: “It will be interesting to see what she has to say when we show her the footage.”

Ms Kercher’s body was flown into Heathrow Airport on Sunday.

Her father, John Kercher said he was pleased his daughter’s body was back with her family: “We weren’t sure when she would be coming back to us, which was frustrating since we couldn’t make funeral arrangements.”

Mr Lumumba has told police he was at his bar in the city when Ms Kercher died. Ms Kercher was found with her throat cut on November 2. Italian prosecutors believe she died about 10pm the previous evening after her neck was cut when she refused to take part in an extreme sex game.

On Friday, Judge Claudia Matteini said there was enough evidence to hold Ms Knox, Mr Lumumba and Mr Sollecito for up to a year.

All three deny any involvement in her death.

Ms Kercher, a Leeds University student, travelled to Perugia in August for a year-long study exchange at the city’s University for Foreigners.
