Winehouse scoops MTV artists’ choice award

AMY WINEHOUSE was a winner at the MTV Europe Music Awards last night with a prize voted by her peers.

Winehouse scoops MTV artists’ choice award

The singer received the artists’ choice award, chosen by fellow musicians.

Winehouse was a last-minute addition to the bill for the ceremony in Munich, Germany.

Her win follows a troubled few months in which she was admitted to hospital with a drug-induced seizure, spent time in a rehab clinic and was involved in several public bust-ups with husband Blake Fielder-Civil.

Securing her for last night’s ceremony was a coup for organisers — in September she cancelled an appearance at the MTV Video Music Awards in Las Vegas while she received treatment for her problems.

The 24-year-old star was nominated in three other categories — best UK & Ireland act, album of the year for Back To Black and most addictive track for Rehab — but failed to win.

She was not the only British star there.

Pete Doherty and his band Babyshambles were among the performers.

Doherty was handed a suspended jail sentence on Monday for a string of drug and motoring offences, and appeared to be on his best behaviour for the awards.

Despite a night on the tiles in Munich on Tuesday night with a Kate Moss lookalike, he turned up on time for his MTV rehearsal yesterday.

A show insider said: “He was punctual, behaved professionally and was charming to everyone. We were pleasantly surprised.”

Rapper Snoop Dogg hosted the ceremony from Munich’s Olympiahalle.

Besides Winehouse, the only other British winners were Devon rock band Muse, who were voted best UK & Ireland act and best headliners for their live performances.

Avril Lavigne was also a double winner, picking up best solo artist and most addictive track for Girlfriend.

Rihanna, who topped the British chart for 10 weeks with her hit Umbrella, was named best urban act.

Nelly Furtado won album of the year for Loose and Linkin Park were named band of 2007.

Rock group Tokio Hotel received the award for best international act.
