Female sharks can reproduce asexually

FEMALE sharks can reproduce without having sex, a team of scientists from Belfast and the US havediscovered.

A female hammerhead shark has been found to have given birth without mating, and its offspring has no paternal DNA.

This is the first scientific report of so-called asexual reproduction in sharks. Researchers say the discovery raises concerns about the reproductive and genetic health of dwindling shark populations.
