Channel 4 to launch review of Big Brother

CHANNEL 4 last night announced it was launching a review into the Big Brother programme following the race row which has engulfed the show.

The channel’s chairman Luke Johnson said Celebrity Big Brother would remain on air until its completion next week, but Channel 4 had commissioned a review of the “editorial and compliance processes” which support it.

Jade Goody was evicted from the Big Brother house in a public vote on Friday after days of controversy about her behaviour towards Shilpa. The racism sparked international fury.

Speaking outside Channel 4’s offices following a board meeting to discuss the future of the show, Mr Johnson said the channel’s board abhorred racism and profoundly regretted any offence caused to viewers.

“Clearly many people were worried and offended by what they saw.

“All board members of Channel 4 abhor racism. We are also committed to ensuring that the channel continues to fulfil its remit to explore social issues.”

Meanwhile, the station was plunged into another race row yesterday with the reality show Shipwrecked.

Media watchdog Ofcom said it had received 69 complaints about racism on the show after it launched on Sunday night. One of the contestants is alleged to have made comments about black, gay and fat people.

Comments made by Lucy Buchanan, 18, have sparked fury.

The show sees two groups of young people placed on desert islands on the South Pacific living as castaways.
