The Spanish woman slipped out of Barcelona’s San Pau hospital with her twins, a hospital spokesman said. Local media said she had avoided the press probably because she had sold her story exclusively to a particular newspaper or magazine.

She gave birth by Caesarean section on December 29. The hospital spokesman said she and the babies, believed to be boys, were all well.

The woman, reportedly from Andalusia in southern Spain and married for 13 years, became pregnant after she received in-vitro fertilisation treatment in South America.

Romanian Adriana Iliescu was previously the oldest woman known to have given birth, after having a baby girl in January 2006 at the age of 66.

A twin died hours after the birth.

The girl, named Eliza Maria, was born five weeks premature by Caesarean section. Her twin sister died in the womb.
