The camera, outside the Railway Inn in Devonport, Plymouth, Devon, was a replacement for one Anthony Gardiner of Home Park Avenue, Plymouth, had stolen from the pub just a few days earlier.

District Judge Paul Farmer said Gardiner had stolen expensive cameras from around the city which had been put in place to help prevent offences being committed.

He said Gardiner was “foolish enough” to leave one of them running and it led to an identification, bringing him to court.

The judge sentenced Gardiner to a total of 120 days’ imprisonment.

At an earlier hearing, the magistrates chairman told Gardiner: “You are a pretty rubbish burglar.”
