Celtic to fly dead girl home

A FOOTBALL club is to donate £5,000 (€7,400) to help fly a student’s body back to Poland.

The gesture by Scottish Premier League leaders Celtic came the same day the man accused of the murder of Angelika Kluk appeared in court.

Peter Tobin, aged 60 and of no fixed address, appeared at Glasgow Sheriff Court yesterday. The handyman faced a total of three charges, including one of murder, and two of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Tobin made no plea or declaration and was remanded in custody.

Ms Kluk, 23, was found in St Patrick’s RC Church in Glasgow, where she had been working and staying over the summer, on Friday September 29.

She had been reported missing five days earlier when she failed to turn up for her cleaning job.

The student had been due to return to her language studies course just a few days later in Gdansk, Poland.

Celtic are to donate the money to help fly her body back to Poland.

The team, who have two Polish players in their squad, made the gesture after it emerged that the student’s family were struggling to meet the costs.

A club spokesperson said: “Everyone at Celtic Football Club was affected by the tragic circumstances of Angelika’s death.

“The pain and distress which Angelika’s family is experiencing is unimaginable and clearly our thoughts are with the family at this difficult time.

“When the family’s current circumstances came to light, the club felt it was important that we should provide some assistance.

“Clearly, we are well aware that there are thousands of people within the Polish community now living in Scotland and there is no doubt these people too will have been deeply affected by recent events.

“As a club, established to help those in need, we felt strongly that this was the right thing to do.”
