THE Ugandan government and Lord’s Resistance Army rebels are set to halt fighting after a brutal 19-year conflict that left thousands dead, officials said.

The agreement, which goes into effect at 7am tomorrow was reached during peace talks in Juba, southern Sudan on Saturday. It calls for both sides to end all military action in one of Africa’s longest wars.

“We have agreed on the issues and put our signatures on the document,” said government spokesman Paddy Ankunda. “We are happy, and now we will continue working for a comprehensive peace agreement.”
