Worries over Congo violence triggers troop deployments
A contingent of 50 French, Portuguese and Swedish troops arrived overnight with attack and transport helicopters, and 200 German troops were expected to arrive from Gabon, where they have been based for weeks, EU force spokesman Colonel Thierry Fusalba said.
About 1,000 EU troops are already in Congo to help the 17,500-member UN peace force overseeing the first elections in 45 years of coups, corrupt rule and war. The mandate for the force is not to provide general security in Congo, but to act as a rapid reaction force.
