Man held after four family members killed

FOUR members of the same family were found gunned down at their home yesterday.

The bodies of a man and woman in their 70s and two men in their 40s were discovered in a house in Newcastle upon Tyne after a relative of the victims walked into a nearby police station.

The victims were later found in the house in Benwell Grove.

At a news conference, Northumbria Police Assistant Chief Constable Kevin Mathieson said: “Shortly before 6.15 this morning, a 40-year-old man entered Westgate Road Police Station in Newcastle, carrying a sports bag and claimed that a number of people were dead at a house in nearby Benwell Grove.

“The bag brought into the police station contained what appeared to be a handgun with a silencer, a pump-action shotgun and a quantity of ammunition.

“The man also alleged that the bag contained an improvised explosives device.”
