480 hours community service for shoplifting Winona

ACTRESS Winona Ryder was yesterday ordered to carry out 480 hours community service for shoplifting from an exclusive department store.

The 31-year-old Hollywood star must carry out the work at several charitable foundations, including a hospital for the terminally ill and a charity which cares for babies with AIDS.

Judge Elden Fox also sentenced her to three years supervised probation and ordered her to take part in a drug and psychological counselling programme.

Ryder was ordered to pay fines of $10,000 in compensation to Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills, the store from which she stole around $6,000 worth of designer merchandise and damaged other items.

“It is not my intention to make an example of you,” Judge Fox told Ryder. But he said she had disappointed many people and she would have to “confront certain issues” that led to her behaviour.

“You have refused to accept personal responsibility,” he told the actress.

“If you steal again, you will go to jail. Understand that?” he told her.

“Yes, Your Honour, I do,” she replied.
