THE Irish Government was last night considering the latest proposal on a mutual defence agreement between EU members to ensure it acknowledged the country’s neutrality.

After a number of countries refused to accept a draft clause drawn up by Ireland and the three other neutral countries in the Union, the Italian presidency agreed to come up with new wording.

The article suggested that all member states would be automatically obliged to come to the assistance of another state if they were the victim of an armed aggression.
