WORKERS at a Fiat factory in southern Italy struck for an eighth straight day yesterday, scuffling with police and prompting a call for a nationwide metalworkers’ strike in solidarity.

About 10 people were slightly injured in the clash when police moved in to remove the picket line outside the plant in Melfi, in the Basilicata region in the “instep” of the Italian peninsula.

In a show of solidarity, the metalworkers’ branch of labour confederation CGIL called a four-hour nationwide strike for tomorrow.
