State TV showed footage of the rescue after a park worker in Belo Horizonte was alerted by what he though was the sound of a “cat crying”.

Jose da Cruz: told TV Globo: “I heard a sound of a cat. But, between a child and a cat, the noise is the same.

“Then, the noise was increasing and it caught my attention.”

Mr da Cruz called for help from park security and they used a branch to fish the bag out of the water.

They only realised that a baby was inside when they opened the bag and found the girl, dressed in a pink dress, inside.

The bag had been attached to a piece of wood which had apparently stopped it from sinking. The baby, thought to be two months old, was recovering in hospital yesterday, while officials searched for the child’s family.

“She is in good condition,” Dr Claudia Guimaraes said.

“It’s a miracle she survived the heat and somehow didn’t drown.”

Authorities had no leads on why the baby was thrown in the Pampulha Lagoon in downtown Belo Horizonte, which is in one of the city’s most famous parks and is often crowded with weekend visitors.
