THE leader of an armed nationalist group that seized a remote Peruvian police station and took officers and soldiers hostage surrendered to authorities yesterday, but 125 of his followers remained inside with their captives.

Former army major Antauro Humala turned himself in to National Police chief Felix Murazzo. Humala’s group wants to establish a nationalist indigenous movement modelled on the ancient Incan Empire and has demanded the resignation of President Alejandro Toledo.
