Police siege of gunman’s hideout enters fifth day

POLICE marksmen were spending their fifth day yesterday outside a building where a gunman has been holed up in a flat with another man since St Stephen’s Day.

Police negotiators are trying to persuade the gunman to leave the flat in Hackney, east London, peacefully.

Neighbours dived for cover as the man, in his early 30s, shot at police officers who returned fire after they tried to storm the property on Thursday. No one was injured and police withdrew to safety.
