RETAIL sales which reflect the state of the economy fell 0.5% in volume terms in the year to June.

One of the country’s top economists, Jim Power of Friends First, warned of much worse to come as consumer confidence is seriously eroded by rampant inflation in the months ahead.

He warned of negative equity and a slump in bonuses as well as a serious slow down in wage increases.
