COLOUR pictures on cigarette packs showing people dying from cancer or newborn babies suffering the effects of passive smoking could be the next tactic in the Government’s campaign against smoking.

Verbal warnings must cover almost a third of the front of a pack of cigarettes and 40% of the back but research shows that a picture can really drive home the message that smoking is bad for you.

From October next year, EU countries will be able to choose from a library of photographs designed to shock smokers into giving up the habit.
