BRITONS applying for a new passport will need to undergo fingerprint and iris scans within four years under the national ID card scheme announced yesterday.

The so-called "biometrics" which may also include a facial recognition scan could also be extended to driving licences in that time, although a decision has not yet been taken, said British Home Secretary David Blunkett.

It is believed issuing of the controversial new cards will begin in 2007-2008.
