THE European Commission plans to set up a mission in northern Cyprus to co-ordinate support for Turkish Cypriots after their exclusion from the EU’s imminent enlargement, a top official said yesterday.

But EU enlargement commissioner Guenter Verheugen, speaking after EU foreign ministers agreed €259 million in aid for the north, denied such a mission would amount to recognition for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
