THE number of people killed on Irish roads looks set to reach a record 40-year low this week, garda figures reveal.

Up to last night, 338 people had died in traffic accidents since January, compared to 376 during all of last year.

In the last year less than an average of one person was killed every day on the road. In 1965, when there were 356 fatalities.
