Italian newspaper La Repubblica yesterday quoted European Commission sources as airing the theory as the British and Italian judicial systems appeared to be competing over the right to take action against the man suspected of trying to blow up an Underground train at Shepherd’s Bush, west London on July 21.

Osman’s lawyer, Antonietta Sonnessa, declined to discuss the idea of temporary extradition after visiting him yesterday in Rome’s Regina Coeli prison.

Britain is seeking to take Osman to Britain under a European Arrest Warrant.

They are putting together paperwork needed for the Italians to set a date for a hearing.

Meanwhile, Italian judge Zaira Secchi yesterday confirmed the arrest of Osman under Italian law for association with international terrorism.
