SUPPORTERS of a growing pro-democracy movement yesterday faced off against riot police in cities across Egypt, demanding political reforms and shouting slogans against Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

Witnesses at some rallies by the Kifaya, or Enough, movement, reported beatings by police and group members said at least 40 activists had been arrested across the country.

The group had called for rallies in 15 cities.
