Four killed in Glasgow blast

FOUR people were killed and at least 10 more were trapped in rubble after a massive blast at a plastics factory in Glasgow.

The explosion destroyed Stockline Plastics in the west end of Glasgow shortly after midday.

Rescuers were last night in contact with five people entombed beneath the rubble but were unsure how many others may be trapped.

Strathclyde firemaster Brian Sweeney said that six casualties had been rescued from the collapsed building and his firefighters were in contact with a further five people buried beneath the rubble. He added that they could not be certain there were not more people trapped under the pile of brickwork.

“We are unsure about the precise numbers, but we are in vocal contact with five people and I’m very optimistic that those people will come out and be rescued alive in the next few hours.

“All we can say is a number of people have been rescued by our team who were trapped beneath the rubble.

“I think that amounts to six at the moment, including a young lady who was rescued minutes ago; the situation is changing from minute to minute.”
