THE government has made a bad mistake by allowing Sky dominate digital television, according to a former chairman of the RTÉ authority.

Professor Farrel Corcoran said Sky now had 255,000 Irish customers for its digital television service while its competitors, NTL and Chorus, are in a weak position.

"Sky is currently in a softly, softly phase, as it grows its market, but may get far more aggressive with the Irish as it gains dominant market position. We saw a little of that in the sports rights issue last year, as the Government was deeply embarrassed for forgetting to deal with listed events."
