The bust, sitting on a green onyx and marble pedestal, was purchased by an anonymous telephone bidder, said Patty Fox, a spokeswoman for Sotheby’s in New York.

Hepburn made the bust of her long-time love and frequent co-star in the 1960s. She considered it one of her prized possessions. It sat on a bedside table in her New York City home and often went with her when she travelled.

It was featured in the 1967 film, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner, Tracy’s last film and in which they both starred.

On Thursday, a diamond and sapphire brooch given to Katharine Hepburn by her then boyfriend, Howard Hughes, sold for €105,000.

Among the other lots sold were other artworks executed by Hepburn herself as well as furniture, clothing and studio photographs.

Hepburn, who won four Academy Awards, died last June aged 96 in Old Saybrook, Connecticut, US.
