TAX rates for business and wealthy people should be increased to pay for better public services and infrastructure, the leader of the country’s biggest public sector union urged yesterday.

IMPACT general secretary Peter McLoone claimed Ireland could not pay for European-standard services and infrastructure while continuing to cut the overall tax take.

“Any further tax reform must take more from the businesses and individuals who can afford to pay, so that we can provide quality services for those who can’t,” he told the ICTU conference.
