‘A nice guy who had never been in trouble’
The family had moved there relatively recently and it appears Khan was not well known among the local Muslim community.
Neighbours said Khan originally lived in Leeds and his family came from Pakistan, whereas his wife’s family had origins in India.
The married father of one was initially disapproved of by his wife’s family because he was not as traditional a Muslim as they would have wished, an in-law said.
“He does not believe in having a beard or wearing a hat. But he has always seemed a really nice guy and has never been in any trouble that I know of,” an in-law said.
Khan worked with disabled children in a primary school. His wife is also thought to be involved in education.
Local people suggested she was pregnant.
She was last seen on Tuesday leaving the house with police. Her husband had not been seen since last week.
Neighbour Imran Zaman described Khan as “quiet”.
“He kept himself to himself,” he said.
“He was a nice bloke, but who would have thought he would have done something like this?”
He added: “I never knew he had a religious background. I go to the local mosque and have never seen him there.”
A community leader, who asked not to be identified, said it was likely Khan had met the other men away from the area.
He said: “These groups (extremist Islamic groups) try to bypass the community by setting up youth groups in community centres or targeting students.”
He went on: “They get introduced to these groups who show them their form of Islam.”
Documents belonging to Khan were found in the debris of the Edgware Road blast.
