COURTROOMS were emptied and hearings postponed across Italy yesterday as magistrates protested over a reform plan.

The Government plan, which would force magistrates to choose after five years whether to work as a prosecutor or a judge, is seen by The National Association of Magistrates as a threat to their independence.
