Chunqiao dies

ZHANG Chunqiao, one of two surviving members of the Gang of Four that terrorised China during the violent 1966-76 Cultural Revolution, has died. He was 88.

Zhang died on April 21 of cancer, the official Xinhua News Agency said yesterday.

Led by Jiang Qing, the wife of communist founder Mao Zedong, the Gang of Four persecuted thousands of people following Mao’s call in the mid-1960s to wage permanent revolution.
