Iraqi troops not ready, says Bush

US PRESIDENT George W Bush pointedly acknowledged last night that US-trained Iraqi troops are not ready to take over their country’s security.

And he cautioned that next month’s elections in Iraq are only the beginning of a long process toward Iraqi democracy.

“I certainly don’t expect the process to be trouble-free,” Mr Bush said at a year-end news conference in which he signalled tough spending cuts to come.
