THE penalty points system was a major factor in reducing road deaths by 72 in the past 10 months, but more lives could be saved if more was invested in road safety, according to the National Safety Council.

NSC chairman Eddie Shaw also criticised the limited resources given to enforcing our drink driving laws.

He said that while Ireland has a "chronic drink driving problem'', we have a low level of enforcement compared with other countries. There is just less than one drink driving arrest in the year for each licensed premises in the State.
