Powell promises UN role in post-war Iraq

US SECRETARY OF STATE Colin Powell yesterday promised a UN role in the reconstruction of post-war Iraq — but insisted the coalition would play the leading part in its future.

After a day of meetings with EU and NATO foreign ministers in Brussels, Mr Powell said the forces that took on the task and expense of removing Saddam Hussein "have to play the leading role in determining the way forward."

However, European national leaders, including Bertie Ahern, insisted the UN must play a central role.
