MARK THATCHER, son of former British Prime Minister Margaret, was charged yesterday with violating South Africa's anti-mercenary law in connection with an alleged plot to topple the government of oil-rich Equatorial Guinea.

Thatcher was brought before a magistrates' court in Cape Town and bail set at two million rands (€250,000).

The charge followed his arrest early yesterday at his home in the city.
