Chess champion Kasparov retires

GARY KASPAROV, the world’s top-ranked chess player for the past 20 years, has announced his retirement from the professional circuit.

The 41-year-old Russian made the announcement at a news conference yesterday in the southern Spanish town of Linares, which hosts a prestigious tournament every year.
