‘May this never happen again’

As communities across the world gathered to remember the victims of September 11, it was 60 seconds of silent reflection that best expressed the feelings of sadness and solidarity that memories of the atrocities stirred.

At 1:46pm, the precise moment, Irish time, when the first of the two World Trade Center towers was hit, the tolling of church bells and playing of laments stopped and schoolchildren, workers, homemakers and politicians all over the country stood still, bowed heads and remembered.
