28 deaf children die in school fire

A FIRE in a boarding school for the deaf in southern Russia killed 28 children and seriously injured 17 others yesterday, as rescuers raced from bed to bed to awaken students who could not hear alarms.

Firefighters saved 138 people in the two-story Republican School for Deaf Children.

Many survived only after being thrown from second-story windows onto mattresses and other bedding used to break their fall, teacher Marzhanat Aliyeva said.
