New drink laws for Aborigines

TOUGH new laws targeting alcoholism among Aborigines in north-eastern Australia took effect yesterday.

In a country where drinking is regarded as a national pastime, alcoholism has hit Aboriginal communities the hardest. Aborigines are also the poorest, sickest, least employed and most frequently jailed.
