‘Adultery’ reason for Best’s divorce
Ms Best, aged 32, stated in a divorce document made public yesterday that she found her husband "in the bed of the woman concerned at her home" and found it "intolerable" to live with him.
The part-time TV presenter, who recently appeared in the jungle reality show I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, was granted a "quickie" divorce at the High Court's Family Division in central London.
Neither party attended the hearing.
The couple's nine-year marriage hit the rocks after the former Manchester United star started binge drinking not long after his liver transplant.
In a question and answer-style written statement in support of her divorce petition, Alex Best is asked to "state briefly your reasons for saying that the respondent [George Best] has committed the adultery alleged".
Ms Best answered: "I found the respondent in the bed of the woman concerned at her home."
She is then asked in the document: "On what date did it first become known to you that the respondent had committed the adultery alleged?"
The answer is given as November 28, 2003. Asked if she found it "intolerable" to live with the respondent, she answered: "Yes."
She said that since November 28, 2003, she has not lived in the same household as her husband.
In a separate document, Best, aged 57, said he would not defend the case.
In the document he was asked: "Do you admit the adultery alleged in the petition?" He stated: "Yes."
He was then asked: "Even if you do not intend to defend the case, do you object to paying the costs of the proceedings?"
Best stated: "No, provided they are reasonable."
The couple were married on July 24, 1995, when Best was 49 and Alexandra Jane Pursey was 23.
