Militants vow revenge after Israel kills five in raid

MILITANTS said yesterday they will renew attacks on Israel, despite a six-month ceasefire, after Israeli soldiers killed five Palestinians, at least three of them armed, in a West Bank arrest raid.

The killings and the threat of revenge ended a lull that accompanied Israel’s just-completed withdrawal from 25 Jewish settlements in the Gaza Strip and West Bank.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said the quartet of Middle East mediators - the US, the EU, the UN and Russia - will meet on September 20 in New York to discuss establishing Palestinian control over the evacuated settlements.
