It emerged that the thieves spent three months tunnelling under a busy city avenue to break into a Central Bank vault.
It is already being hailed as one of the world's biggest robberies, netting $67.8m. The method was remarkably similar to a tunnel heist last year in which over $1m (€0.8m) was stolen from a Sao Paulo company that transports money for banks.
