Mother of two dies after plastic surgery

A MOTHER of two young children has died while undergoing minor cosmetic surgery in New York.

Kay Cregan failed to regain consciousness after going under anaesthetic.

Hundreds of mourners attended her funeral in Croom, Co Limerick, yesterday after her remains were flown home.

She went for minor facial cosmetic surgery last week while on a short visit to her sister, Agnes, who lives in New York.

Her husband, Liam, rushed to New York on learning that the operation had gone tragically wrong.

The couple lived at Skagh, Croom, with their two sons, Brian, eight, and Eoghan, six.

Kay, aged 42, worked in the rates department at Limerick City Council and many shocked colleagues attended yesterday’s funeral.

One local said: “The whole place is just in a state of shock. Kay was a lovely person and she was very much into education matters. One of her little boys is due to make his Holy Communion next May.

“I only met her one day last week and was talking to her. It’s hard to take it in and the whole parish is devastated.”

It is understood that the Department of Foreign Affairs helped get the remains released for return to Ireland.

Ms Cregan was originally from Killaloe, Co Clare.

Croom parish priest Fr Joseph Kennedy was chief celebrant at the funeral Mass in St Mary’s Church yesterday, and the burial took place in the adjoining Reilig Mhuire.

“Kay’s sudden death has shocked the entire parish. It has had a numbing affect. People still can’t believe it.

"She died when one would be expecting her to be looking forward to a long and happy life with Liam whom she married in November of 1995. She would also have been looking forward, as a loving mother, to seeing her little boys grow into manhood,” he said.

He said she also had a successful career.

“She had so much to offer in life,” Fr Kennedy added.
