JOHN ROBERTS was sworn in as the 17th chief justice of the US yesterday, taking his oath at a White House ceremony attended by President George W Bush and other justices of the Supreme Court.

Mr Bush said it was “a very meaningful event in the life of our nation” - almost 19 years to the day since the late Chief Justice William Rehnquist took his oath in the same room at the White House.

Mr Roberts was sworn in a little more than three hours after he was confirmed by the Senate on a vote of 78-22.
