FOREIGN fishermen caught poaching in Australia’s northern waters will be held in detention centres rather than on their boats while awaiting trial, the government said.

The practice of holding such fishermen - most of them from Indonesia - on their cramped boats for weeks has been criticised by Australian and Indonesian authorities.

One fisherman recently died after suffering an epileptic seizure while detained aboard his boat off the northern city of Darwin.
