THREE leaders of one of Vietnam’s biggest drug rings have been sentenced to death for smuggling heroin from Laos.

Nguyen Xuan Thanh and his two female associates, Mai Thi Luong and Pham Bich Hoa, were convicted of trafficking more than 10kg of heroin into Vietnam from 2001 until their arrests in April 2002, a court official said. They were sentenced to death at the end of the their 12-day trial.

The three headed a 22-member gang in the port city of Haiphong, 65 miles north-east of Hanoi.
