CONSUMERS returned to the shops in April easing fears of a slowdown in spending which would hold back this year's expected recovery.

Retail sales figures for the month were up 2.7% from March, by far the highest bounce this year, surprising economists who had predicted a gloomier continuation of the downward trend.

Retail sales jumped 2.5% in the month, according to the Central Statistics Office.
