Indonesia launches attack to 'destroy' Aceh rebels

INDONESIAN planes launched rockets at a rebel base in Aceh province yesterday, signalling the start of a major military offensive.

The attack came just hours after peace talks broke down in Tokyo and martial law was imposed on the oil and gas rich region.

The government in Jakarta said it parachuted hundreds of soldiers into the province and moved 15 warships into the area.
