PATRIOTISM was taking a hold in Britain yesterday as the country’s troops fought fiercely in Iraq, with two opinion polls suggesting a majority of the previously sceptical public now supported the conflict.

The reported shift in thinking came only a day after hundreds of thousands of Britons took to the streets of central London demanding an immediate halt to the war.

Asked whether Britain and the United States were "right or wrong" to wage war in Iraq, 56% of those asked said they were right, a YouGov poll for the Sunday Times said.
