Shelter crisis rages on after tsunami

ALMOST two million people were left homeless after the Asian tsunami. One year on, and as many as 1.4 million remain in temporary accommodation.

In Sri Lanka alone, more than 100,000 homes were destroyed or badly damaged, leaving half a million people homeless on the island.

Sri Lankan government sources say only 5,000 permanent homes 6.8% out of the 78,000 needed have been built.
