THE amount of drugs available on the streets is diminishing due to a severe drought in cannabis and ecstasy, according to garda and drug sources.

The drought in cannabis resin, by far the most popular drug in Ireland, and ecstasy, the second most popular drug, is occurring not just in Dublin, but across the country.

The drought is most acute in Limerick city as most of the gangs controlling the drug trade there are under 24-hour surveillance by specialist garda units after a spate of murders and abductions.
